A study of the sectional conflict beginning with the nullification crisis. The course will not only examine the political, social and economic developments in the period leading to the civil, but will emphasize the political thought of Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, and John C. Calhoun.
Instructors: Lucas Morel is Associate Professor of Politics at Washington and Lee University. He is the author of Lincoln’s Sacred Effort and has published widely on Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and slavery. Thomas L. Krannawitter is Vice President of the Claremont Institute and Visiting Instructor of Government at Claremont McKenna College.
