One-Day Seminar: The Nullification Crisis hosted by Middle Georgia RESA (HELD ONLINE)
October 22 @ 3:00 pm - 4:45 pm
The Nullification Crisis of the late 1820’s and early 1830’s was arguably the closest the Union came to dissolution prior to the Civil War. Just like 1860, South Carolina led the way, arguing that the American system of federalism gave individual states to the legitimate ability to judge the constitutionality of federal statutes. Southerners viewed such power as a defense against economic partiality toward northern manufacture ring while Northerners suspected the South’s true motivation for supporting nullification was to defend slavery.
Join us at the (virtual) table as we examine several original sources that illuminate both sides of this historical debate. Participants will receive an e-copy of the readings to prepare for the seminar discussion, which can be found here.
