SUMMARY:The Gilded Age and the Challenge to the Founding
DESCRIPTION:The results of the Civil War clarified many fundamental issues regarding the nature of the American government and the enlightenment ideals that rooted its founding. Many new theories of government—some native\, some imported from Europe—promised progress beyond political equality\, individual liberty\, and representative government. The United States did not escape the influence of these ideas. Through the discussion of primary sources\, this seminar will examine how Populism\, Progressivism\, Scientific Racism\, Socialism\, Social Darwinism and various other political and social theories influenced American politics. \n\nHistoric Site: Hearst Castle\nHotel: Cavalier Oceanfront Resort\n\nGather with a small group of teachers from around the country for three days immersed in discussion and exploration of a single topic in American history. Weekend Seminars are a free opportunity for teachers hosted near an important historical site. Teachers will prepare ahead of time for seminars by reading selected historical documents in the provided course packet. Once the seminar begins\, the discussion leader guides a peer-to-peer\, text-based conversation among all participants. Meals\, materials\, single-occupancy rooms\, and historical site visits are 100% covered by Teaching American History. At the end of each course\, every teacher receives a letter of participation for fifteen contact hours of continuing education and a stipend of $600 to help defray travel costs.

SUMMARY:9/11: Causes and Consequences
DESCRIPTION:This seminar considers some of the causes and consequences of the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11\, 2001. Among the topics it covers are the rise of militant Islam\, the American response to international terrorism\, aspects of the Patriot Act\, intelligence failures\, the U.S. attack on the Taliban\, the subsequent war in Afghanistan\, the war in Iraq\, and the consequences of 9/11 for American politics. \nIn discussing the decision to invade Iraq and the war in Afghanistan\, the seminar focuses on issues of intelligence or information and how they affected the decisions of presidents\, commanders in the field\, and those operating in villages and outposts in remote parts of the world. \n\nHistoric Site: George W.
