One-Day Seminar: The American Founding, hosted by Alta HS (Sandy, UT)

This seminar will examine the principles of the American Revolution and how they came to define the structure of the American Constitution for the Founding generation. One-Day Seminar: The Federalist-Antifederalist Debates, hosted by Alta HS (Sandy, UT)

This seminar is designed to analyze the main arguments set forth in print during the crucial years of 1787-1788 concerning the adoption of the newly proposed Constitution of the United States. Through a close reading of the primary source material we will attempt to identify the most important principles that animated the participants in the discussion, including the fundamental assumptions therein about the political order and human nature. Virtually any written framework for government can serve as a limit on that government's powers and reach, by virtue of listing and describing its powers. The United States Constitution and Bill of Rights is unique because of the extent to which, and specificity by which, these two foundational documents explicitly limit the powers of the national government, delegating powers to both the states and individuals.
