Convention Contributions: Ingersoll had a perfect attendance at the convention, despite this he rarely spoke. He favored a revision of the Articles of Confederation over a new constitution. Fellow delegate William Pierce described “ a modesty in his character that keeps him back.”
New Government Participation: After the convention, Ingersoll served on the Philadelphia common council in 1789. Following this, he spent 9 years serving as Pennsylvania’s Attorney General from 1790-1799. From 1798-1801 he served as the Philadelphia city Solicitor and as the U.S. District Attorney for Pennsylvania from 1800-1801. He returned to serve as Pennsylvania’s Attorney General from 1811-1817, during which time he failed his campaign as the Federalist Vice President in 1812. Finally, in 1821 he served as a presiding judge of the Philadelphia District Court until his death in 1822.
