First Amendment: Free Speech
This seminar will explore the crucial role of free speech in a democratic republic and the Supreme Court’s evolving standards of jurisprudence since the first opinion handed down in 1919. We will focus on landmark rulings surrounding direct incitement, hateful and offensive speech, free expression, and compelled speech.
This program will be conducted as a discussion, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings with Professor Fornieri facilitating the conversation, instead of lecturing. Registrants are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance.
