Missouri, Dred Scott and the Coming of the Civil War

The Civil War was the result of decades of issues, ideas, and actions by individuals and groups, across a less than 100-year-old America. In this seminar, teachers will explore the connection between emerging ideas about slavery and race, and a Supreme Court decision that contributed to the causes of the Civil War.

This program will be conducted as a discussion, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings, and with Professor Monroe facilitating the conversation, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants, therefore, are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. Teachers will receive a Letter of Attendance at the conclusion of the seminar.
