Westward Expansion

Westward Expansion

America’s vision of westward expansion and it’s “Manifest Destiny” sounded magnificent on paper, but what would it take to expand from sea to shining sea? This seminar will consider the purposes for westward expansion from Thomas Jefferson’s presidency to the mid-nineteenth century, with particular attention given to President Andrew Jackson’s policies on Indian removal and the impact of westward expansion on slavery.

Using discussion and primary documents, Professor Tucker will facilitate the conversation instead of lecturing. Registrants are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions.
