This collection is the first of three volumes of Supreme Court cases in the Ashbrook Center’s extended series of document collections covering major periods, themes, and institutions in American history and government. Free Speech and The Supreme Court round out the series. It is appropriate to begin with the volume on the religion clauses of the First Amendment. This is the first freedom guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, as the United States was the first nation founded on this right.
