Federalist Timeline of Federalist-Antifederalist Debates
Federalist-Antifederalist Debates Exhibit Home
Although the bulk of what can be properly termed ‘Federalist’ writings are the 85 essays that comprise The Federalist, numerous allied authors from across the states wrote in support of the Constitution, sometimes with arguments that diverged from those of Madison, Hamilton, and Jay.
In a way, these allied authors operated similar to the broad array of Antifederalist writers: spread across the country, working generally in isolation, and writing primarily for their local audience, albeit on a topic of national interest. Taking these other Federalists into account alongside Madison, Hamilton, and Jay provides a broader picture of reasons individuals found to support the Constitution and the new government it would create.
